China bans certain plastic bags and more
Hey everyone
There is a report from the Environmental News Network that talks about policies the world's governments are taking towards limiting the use and waste of plastic bags. This story has been getting some traction as I received a phone call about it from a family member earlier this morning.
Don't forget that you can still purchase cloth bags through Green Kits for as low as $5.00! My family has saved at least 60 plastic bags from being sent out to waste by using our Green Kit cloth bags! Green Kits also has expanded their cleaning products catalog.
A Fresh Squeeze has started hosting green events that cover all environmental topics. Most recently there was a presentation by Mark Walsh of the Chicago Climate Exchange. Happy New Year
Happy New Year everyone!
The CASE club for Northside College Prep will be running a sale on SIGG water bottles. Check out SIGG's web site. The design your own option is a pretty cool feature.
I have seen a major push into solar recently. In Scientific America, there is a forward thinking article on the ability of solar power to take us off our dependence of foreign oil. There is also a very good article on the sun in one of the most recent issues of New Scientist.
The Environmental News Network website continues to push forward excellent articles covering environmental issues including China's preparations for the Olympics and SustainableBusiness.com's top twenty companies.
A Fresh Squeeze has offered some fine tips on shaking the winter blues and resolution making for the new year.

It is run by Think Equity, one of the top investment firms around, and will have over 50 high level speakers. You can see the list by going to the Think Equity web site. Plumbing union= anti green
Hey
Comcast, our wonderful cable provider (cough, cough) is building a new site in Philadelphia that is supposed to have waterless urinals. That sounds great!
Except someone at the plumbers union realized that along with not needing water for the urinals, they would also not need the piping. So the union sued!
The result is that there is a five year contract for the water free urinals with the pipes put in just in case they are needed. What!?!?!?!

I think you can chalk this up to the union being pro environment except for when it affects their revenue stream!
I wonder how much carbon emissions were put into the air making the pipes that will not be used. They muffed this one. Keith Olberman would characterize them as being "Today's worst persons in the world!"

New York = clean city?

I heard over the news yesterday that New York is going to have all their taxi cabs hybrid by 2012. With the fact that most traffic is stop and go, that should make a huge difference in the air quality in and around New York. Good for them. The story is below.

News from CASE
Hey Everyone
I am passing on some info from Northside's great CASE Club.
Thanks to Mike Coy for the information.
Students and colleagues – on July 13, 14, and 15, the Pitchfork Music Festival takes place in Union Park (Grand and Western). Lots of freaky, beautiful music will happen, and you have an opportunity to see and hear it all for free, and from the inside out (maybe even from backstage!).
CASE (the Community for Alternative Sources of Energy) are volunteering at to work the festival again this year. If we get enough volunteers, they will let CASE set up a table to advertise our club, and then they’ll give us money. Last year, we volunteered and they gave $500 to CASE. And everybody got to see the show for FREE!! This year, we’d like to get a total of 25 shifts, and they’ll give us $1500!
So – we’re looking for volunteers for 6-hour shifts on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. If you join us, you’ll “work” for 6 hours (11am-5pm or 4pm-10pm) checking wristbands, tickets, ID’s, helping bands set up, tear down, getting water for prima donna performers, etc. You also get a ticket for the show for that day. And you’ll be helping CASE help the environment. Sweet deal. You can work one, two, or all three days – it’s up to you.
If you want to join us (I think they want upperclassmen, but we can work on that), please respond to Tyler Johnson (cc’d above) with your choice of shift(s).

Prince Charles the environmentalist
Hey
Did you know that Prince Charles is a serious environmentalist? I didn't. I watched a Nightline episode on his environmental activities last night. It was very informative.
I recommend going to Google and read some of the articles on his efforts.
PS - He isn't perfect. He recently flew to New York to pick up an award and I guess the carbon output for his trip was huge. That said, he is someone to look to i nthe environmental arena. I would even say he has done more than our Oscar friend Al.

computer recycling and more

The city has a recycling center for computers and other items in the Goose Island neighborhood. The press release with information is below.

Pepsi's energy buy
Hey
This is big corporate news. Pepsi plans to purchase over 1 billion dollars worth of energy credits over 3 years. This is a leader. If a company as large as Pepsi is coming to the table, there is no guessing how much of a difference our efforts can continue to make.

Earth Box

One of the vendors at Green Scene will be Earth Box.
The Univeristy of Illinois and the Chicago School for Agricultural Science support and work with EarthBoxes as part of The Growing Connection. (See below) The Chicago Department of Parks and Recreaton also ordered EarthBoxes.
